This all came out spontaneously in that 2004 presentation to the MDRT. I had channeled a surge of pure rage; I was angry with my father for leaving his family unprotected.

There it was, the connective tissue between my personal journey and my chosen profession. Who could possibly be better suited to work on behalf of the beneficiaries of insurance clients—as I did for over three decades—than a person who knew firsthand what it meant when those insurance policies weren’t in place. It had taken me all those years to fully appreciate how my father’s untimely death and unwise decision had set the course for my mother’s life. This included her ultimate need to be taken in by us at the end of her life, as well as the lives of my siblings and my own. How could I have been unaware of this burr in my saddle, prodding me to teach people to think about the ones who rely on them?

I have always known, in every fiber of my being, that nothing is more important than insuring the wellbeing of those who depend on you. This is the basis of our calling in the insurance business.
